Want to buy a unique Christmas present for your significant other?

How about a guided fishing trip to a national destination? Not only will the fisherman or woman on your list get a good value, your gift will go toward helping kids get involved in fishing.

I’m talking about the Future Fisherman Foundation’s annual auction. Go to futurefisherman.org, then click on the auction tab.  But you’d better hurry. The auction stays open only until 7 a.m. Dec. 3.

Shoppers will be able to bid on 25 guided fishing trips, plus an assortment of tackle packages and merchandise. The feature for this year’s auction is dream trips with nationally known pros Hank Parker or Wally Marshall.

I have to admit I am a bit biased in this one. I have been a board member for the Future Fisherman Foundation for years and I am proud of what our non-profit organization has accomplished in bringing youth to the outdoors.

We run programs such as Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs, SuperFish and Tackle for Educators. Our organization teaches the teachers, making sure they are equipped to pass on the values of the outdoors. We have training programs and provide support and tackle to many programs across the nation.

You’ll find my name on the list of fishermen offering guided trips. Last year I hosted a Texas woman who is a guide herself, and her grandson, and we had a great time. We caught six species of fish on the private lake I live on, but more important, I gained two new friends.

I’m looking forward to doing it again, and to do my small part to fund our programs. Let’s go fishing.
